How to get your Amazon receipt
The fastest route is Your Orders on amazon.com or amazon.ca: open the order, then select Invoice on the order summary and print or save it. The catch is timing, because the invoice only exists once the order ships, and each shipment gets its own. To keep the file after you download it, use a receipt scanning app.

The fastest way to get your Amazon receipt
Amazon gives you two documents for the same purchase, and only one is a receipt in the sense a bookkeeper means. The order summary appears the moment you order. The invoice appears once the order ships. A page showing estimated tax and no invoice link means the order has not shipped, and there is nothing to download until it does.
On desktop
- Sign in and go to Your Orders (Account, then Your Orders).
- Use the time filter above the list to jump to the right window. Amazon's Order History help page describes viewing orders from the past six months or from a specific year.
- Find the order and open View Order Details.
- Select Invoice, or View or Print Invoice, at the top of the order summary.
- Print with your browser, or use Save as PDF in the print dialog to keep a file.
An order that shipped in more than one box produces more than one invoice, because Amazon issues them per shipment. One order number can hand you two or three documents, each with its own totals and tax. Collect them all, or your expense total will be short.
In the Amazon app
Open the app, tap the menu, then Your Orders. Choose the order and open its details. The invoice sits in the same place it does on the web, though on a phone it is usually lower down the screen, under the shipment blocks. Tap it, then use the share sheet to save the PDF. If the app shows a summary only, check the desktop site before concluding the invoice does not exist.
If it was emailed to you
Search your inbox for the order number itself. It is the strongest term you have, because it appears in the order confirmation, the shipping confirmation and any refund message, and nowhere else. "Your Amazon order" and "Your Amazon.ca order" work too, with more noise.
Be careful here: the confirmation email is not the invoice. It confirms what you asked for, at estimated tax, before anything shipped. Bookkeepers and auditors want the shipped document with the tax actually charged. Once you have that PDF, forwarding it to your receipt app's personal forwarding address is the least fiddly way to file it. That path is described under email forwarding.
If you paid cash or have no account
There is no honest workaround here, so we will not invent one. Every Amazon document is tied to the account that placed the order. There is no lookup by card number for someone who is not signed in, and if the order sits on a partner's or a departed assistant's account, only they can pull it.
A card statement line proves money moved and to whom, which beats nothing, but it does not show what you bought, so it will not support a line-by-line claim on its own.
How far back Amazon keeps receipts
| What you want | Where it lives | How far back | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Order summary | Your Orders, order details | Order History filters by the past six months or by year | Exists from the moment you order |
| Invoice (the tax document) | Your Orders, Invoice link | Same order history filters | Only after the shipment goes out; one per shipment |
| Previously archived orders | Your Orders | Same list as everything else | Amazon's Archived Orders page says archived orders are viewable in Your Orders |
| Third-party seller invoice | The seller, via the order page | Depends on the seller | Seller issues it; Amazon may not hold one |
We found no published expiry for old orders on Amazon's own help pages, so we will not quote one. Treat old orders as probably still there, and do not bet your filing on it. What strands people is not age, it is access: a closed account, or a seller who has left the platform.
What you can claim at tax time
An Amazon order is the classic mixed basket, so the question is rarely "which line does Amazon go on" and almost always "which line does each item go on". Canada first, then the United States. General guidance, not tax advice. Confirm anything with real stakes with your accountant.
In Canada (CRA)
For a sole proprietor filing a T2125, consumables such as paper, ink and postage sit on line 8810 (office expenses), while a laptop or camera is usually a capital purchase claimed through capital cost allowance on line 9936 rather than expensed outright. The full line catalogue is in CRA business expense categories for the T2125. If you are registered for GST/HST, the shipped invoice matters more than usual: an Amazon.ca tax invoice shows the tax per shipment, and that detail is what supports an input tax credit. The GST/HST input tax credit finder covers what qualifies. Confirmation emails show estimated tax, a different figure.
In the United States (IRS)
For a Schedule C filer the same order splits too. Office consumables go on line 18 (office expense), other business supplies on line 22 (supplies), and equipment with a useful life beyond the year on line 13 (depreciation and section 179), subject to the elections you qualify for. Sales tax on a deductible purchase is generally part of that item's cost rather than a separate deduction, so the shipped invoice again beats the estimate. Anything personal in the cart stays off the return, which is the part people skip when they file one total. Whether a PDF satisfies IRS recordkeeping is covered in the digital receipts guide.
Keeping the receipt once you have it
Amazon's specific trap is fragmentation. One order becomes several invoices because it shipped in several boxes, the confirmation email carries a different tax figure than the document you need, and a marketplace item sits on a fourth document issued by someone else. By January you have a folder of PDFs that do not add up to the order you remember placing.
scan-ai takes the downloaded invoice as a photo or a PDF, reads each line rather than just the total, and files those lines to their own T2125 or Schedule C category, so a five item order stops being one lump. That per line behaviour is described under tax categorization. Start free, 20 scans and 5 AI chats, no credit card.
Frequently asked questions
How far back can I get an Amazon invoice? Amazon's Order History help page describes viewing orders from the past six months or by year, and we found no published expiry for older orders, so we will not quote a number. The limits people actually hit are access limits: a closed account, an order placed on someone else's account, or a marketplace seller no longer trading.
Why does my order show a summary but no invoice? Because the order has not shipped. The summary is generated when you place the order and shows estimated tax; the invoice is generated against the shipment and shows the tax actually charged. Pre-orders and back-ordered items can sit in that state for weeks. Check back after the shipping confirmation, and remember that a split shipment produces one invoice per box.
A third-party seller shipped my item and there is no invoice. What now? Marketplace sellers issue their own tax invoices, so the button on that order can read Request Invoice from Seller rather than Invoice. Amazon.ca's tax invoice help page directs you to ask the seller, and to contact Amazon customer service if you were charged tax and no invoice ever appears in Your Orders.
Will a printed Amazon invoice PDF hold up for the CRA or the IRS? Both agencies accept legible electronic records showing the vendor, date, amount and tax, and an Amazon invoice PDF carries all four, which is more than most paper receipts manage. Keep the shipped invoice rather than the confirmation email, keep every shipment's copy, and keep them for the full retention period. Details in our guide to digital receipts and CRA audits.
Which tax line does an Amazon order go on? Usually several. One cart can hold consumables, a piece of equipment, a book and something personal, and each belongs on a different line (or on no line at all). Splitting the order by item, instead of filing the total under one category, is the difference between a defensible claim and a guess.
