How to get your Walmart receipt

Quick answer

Sign in at Walmart.com or the app and open Purchase History. Store purchases paid with a card saved to your account land there on their own, ready to print. If one is missing, the receipt lookup tool asks for the store, date, total and last four digits of your card, so cash with no account is a dead end. A receipt scanning app keeps the copy.

The fastest way to get your Walmart receipt

Most Walmart receipt problems end in Purchase History, because Walmart files in-store purchases there whenever the card you tapped is saved to your account. The lookup tool is the backup.

On desktop

  1. Sign in at Walmart.com and select Account, then Purchase History.
  2. Find the purchase. Walmart adds store purchases automatically when you pay with a card saved to your account, and its help page says purchases made with saved cards in the last 12 months are added as well.
  3. Select View details on the order you need.
  4. Select the print icon at the top left to print the receipt or save it as a PDF.
  5. If the purchase is not listed, open the receipt lookup tool at walmart.com/receipt-lookup and enter the ZIP code or city and state of the store, the purchase date, the receipt total, and your card type with the last four digits. Confirm the captcha, select Lookup receipt, and download the file.

Walmart tells you to pull the date and the exact total off your card statement first, because the lookup matches on both.

In the Walmart app

Open the Account tab and select Purchase History. The same orders appear, and the barcode at the foot of an order serves as proof of purchase in a store.

The app also fixes the reverse problem, a paper receipt you would rather not keep: tap the barcode icon in the search bar, scan the barcode on the receipt, and that purchase joins your Purchase History.

On the Canadian site, the equivalent is the Walmart Account ID, a QR code in the Account tab of the Walmart.ca app. Scan it at self checkout and you get an itemized eReceipt in purchase history rather than just a total. If you do not use it, self checkout still asks whether you want your eReceipt by email or SMS. Canadian purchase history sits in the same place, under Account then Purchase History.

If it was emailed to you

Search your inbox for "Walmart" plus the dollar total, or the order number, and check the promotions and updates tabs where order mail often lands. If you checked out as a guest on Walmart.ca, Walmart Canada sends the official receipt email when the order ships, so search the shipping date rather than the order date. Forwarding what you find to a receipt app with a personal capture address saves you the search next April.

If you paid cash or have no account

Every self-serve route back to a Walmart receipt is anchored to something: an account, a saved card, or the last four digits you type into the lookup tool. Pay cash at a till with no account attached, lose the paper, and no field is left to search on. Walmart's help page sends anyone who paid by a method other than debit or credit to its Chat with us support, which is a request rather than a lookup.

If it is gone for good, our lost receipt guide covers what a reconstructed record can do at tax time, and the other receipt lookup guides cover merchants with softer rules. Costco, for instance, ties retrieval to a membership number rather than a card.

How far back Walmart keeps receipts

Where the receipt lives What Walmart's own pages state
Online orders in your account Visible in Purchase History; Walmart publishes no cut-off date
In-store purchase on a card saved to your account Added automatically, including purchases made with saved cards in the last 12 months
Receipt lookup tool Card-based; Walmart publishes no date range, so older purchases may or may not resolve
Paper receipt scanned with the app barcode scanner Stays in Purchase History once linked
Cash purchase with no account No self-serve route; support chat only

The 12-month figure is the one that catches people. It is the window Walmart backfills when you add a card, not a promise that older purchases stay put, so expect gaps across two years of spending.

What you can claim at tax time

A Walmart basket is rarely one expense. Groceries, a printer cartridge and a bag of screws come out on one tape, and both the Canada Revenue Agency and the Internal Revenue Service want the business share sorted by what each item is.

In Canada (CRA)

Only the business lines are claimable, so split the personal items out first. Consumables used running the office (paper, pens, postage) go on T2125 line 8810, supplies consumed in the work itself go on line 8811, and anything durable like a shelving unit is a capital asset claimed through capital cost allowance instead. If you are registered for GST/HST, the tax on the business portion may be recoverable as an input tax credit; the GST/HST input tax credit finder walks that, and the T2125 line by line guide covers the rest of the form.

In the United States (IRS)

The same split applies with different labels. Small office consumables go on Schedule C line 18 (office expense), supplies used in the work go on line 22, and durable purchases are depreciated rather than expensed outright. Sales tax works differently: there is nothing to claim back, so the sales tax on a deductible item generally travels with the cost of that item, and line 23 (taxes and licenses) is for the business's own taxes instead.

General guidance, not tax advice. Which line fits depends on your situation, so confirm with the CRA, the IRS or your accountant before you file.

Keeping the receipt once you have it

Walmart's system is generous while it lasts and blunt when it stops. The automatic backfill is bounded at 12 months of saved-card purchases, the lookup tool wants card digits you may no longer have, and thermal paper fades to blank long before the six-year record-keeping window is up.

Photographing the receipt the day you get it removes all of that. scan-ai reads each line on the photo, not just the total, so the printer cartridge and the groceries in one basket get their own categories and land on the right T2125 or Schedule C line. The habit pays off elsewhere too: Amazon invoices only exist after shipment, Apple keeps a shallow history on the device, and a Home Depot run splits materials from tools.

Frequently asked questions

How far back can I look up a Walmart receipt? Walmart publishes no single retention number. What it does state is that in-store purchases made with a card saved to your account are added to Purchase History automatically, including purchases made with saved cards in the last 12 months. The standalone lookup tool carries no published date range, so treat 12 months as the reliable span and anything older as a maybe.

Can I get a Walmart receipt if I paid cash? Not through Walmart's own tools. The lookup tool matches on card type and the last four digits of the card, and Walmart's help page sends anyone who paid another way to its support chat. If the purchase was never linked to an account and the paper is gone, there is nothing left for the system to match on.

Can a Walmart store reprint my lost receipt? Walmart's published help pages do not document an in-store reprint. They route card purchases to the online lookup tool and everything else to support chat. Associates can trace a transaction from the code printed on a paper receipt, so bringing a damaged one in is worth trying, but nothing Walmart publishes promises it.

Is a photo of a Walmart receipt good enough for the CRA or the IRS? Yes, provided the whole thing is readable. Walmart receipts run long, and the parts a claim depends on (store and date at the top, the item lines, the tax lines and total at the bottom) sit at opposite ends of a strip that curls. Photograph it flat in one frame, or in overlapping shots if it is too long. Our post on digital receipts and CRA audits covers what an acceptable record has to show.

Which tax line does a Walmart purchase go on? It depends on the item, not the store. In Canada, office consumables sit on T2125 line 8810, supplies used in the work on line 8811, and durable equipment goes to capital cost allowance. In the United States the equivalents are Schedule C line 18 for office expense and line 22 for supplies, with durable items depreciated. One mixed basket can touch three lines and a personal category at once.

General guidance, not tax advice. Confirm your own situation with a qualified tax professional before you file.
