How to get your Costco receipt

Quick answer

Sign in at Costco.com, open Orders & Purchases and choose the In-Warehouse tab: Costco shows in-warehouse receipts in six-month blocks covering up to two years. Anything older has to come from the membership counter in person, and in Canada Costco will not go back further than 10 years. A receipt scanning app keeps your own copy so the window never matters.

Costco is one of the friendlier merchants to lose a receipt at, because every purchase is tied to a membership number rather than to whether you kept the paper. The recovery path runs through your account, not the till. Here is where each copy lives, how long it stays there, and how a receipt scanning app makes the window stop mattering.

The fastest way to get your Costco receipt

Everything starts from a signed-in Costco account tied to your membership. Warehouse trips and Costco.com orders sit in two different tabs, so pick the right one first.

On desktop

  1. Sign in to your Costco account at costco.com (costco.ca in Canada).
  2. Select Orders & Returns in the upper right of the home page.
  3. Under Orders & Purchases, choose the In-Warehouse tab for a warehouse trip, or stay on the online orders view for a Costco.com order.
  4. Use the Showing dropdown to pick the six-month period your purchase falls in. Costco displays in-warehouse receipts in six-month increments covering up to two years.
  5. For a warehouse trip, select View Receipt and then Print Receipt. For an online order, open View Order Details and select Print Invoice.
  6. If a recent trip is missing, wait. Costco says a new in-warehouse purchase can take up to 24 hours to appear in your purchase history.

On the Canadian site there is an extra step that catches people out. Costco.ca requires your account to be verified before it shows in-warehouse receipts at all, and verification happens in person: bring your membership card and government-issued photo ID to the Membership Counter. Costco.ca online orders from the last two years are available through My Orders, a date range, your order number, then Print invoice.

In the Costco app

The app reads the same account history. From the Menu, go to the Membership section and select Orders & Purchases, which covers purchases made in the app as well as on Costco.com. It is the quickest route when you need the receipt on screen, not on paper.

If it was emailed to you

Online orders generate confirmation and shipping emails, so searching your inbox for "Costco" around the purchase date usually surfaces the order number you need to find the printable invoice. Warehouse trips are different: unless you asked for a digital receipt at the register, there is no email, and the account history is the only copy. Forward what you do get to a dedicated receipts inbox so it files itself instead of aging out in a mail folder.

If you paid cash or have no account

Cash is much less of a dead end at Costco than at open retailers. You cannot check out without a membership, so the purchase attaches to a membership number whether you paid by card, cash or Costco Shop Card, and that is what the lookup keys off.

The real dead ends are elsewhere. If the purchase was made on someone else's membership, the receipt lives in their account. And several categories never appear in online history at all: Instacart orders, gasoline bought before 30 September 2024, Food Court, Optical and Travel. For those, your local warehouse or customer service is the only route. One more Canadian constraint: Costco does not send receipt information by mail or electronically, so an older Canadian receipt is collected in person.

How far back Costco keeps receipts

Where you look How far back Conditions
Account, In-Warehouse tab Up to 2 years, in six-month windows Signed in; Canadian accounts must be verified in person first
Account, online orders Orders placed in the last 2 years Print Invoice from the order details
Membership counter (US) Older than 2 years Bring picture ID, your membership number and the purchase date
Membership counter (Canada) Up to 10 years, nothing older More than five receipts, or a purchase several years back, may require a Personal Information Release form; pickup is in person
Not in online history at all n/a Instacart, gasoline before 30 Sept 2024, Food Court, Optical, Travel

The 10-year ceiling on the Canadian side is the number to remember. It is generous compared with most retailers, and still a hard stop: Costco Canada states it can only provide receipts for purchases made within the past 10 years. It is slow, too, since a bulk request goes through a release form and a wait.

What you can claim at tax time

A Costco run is the mixed-basket problem in its purest form: coffee, printer paper, a case of water and a laptop stand on one receipt. Neither the Canada Revenue Agency nor the Internal Revenue Service cares that they arrived together. Each line lands on the category that fits it.

In Canada (CRA)

Business consumables usually split between T2125 line 8811, office stationery and supplies, and line 8810, office expenses, with personal groceries on the same receipt claimed nowhere. The GST/HST side is where Costco gets unusual: most basic groceries are zero-rated, so no GST/HST is charged and there is no input tax credit to claim, while the paper towels and electronics on the same slip do carry tax. That makes the tax total a per-line question. The GST/HST input tax credit finder covers what qualifies, and the T2125 line-by-line guide covers the categories.

In the United States (IRS)

The same basket splits across Schedule C lines instead. Office supplies and postage belong on line 18, office expense, while materials and supplies consumed in the business during the year go on line 22, supplies. Anything with a useful life well beyond a year is generally depreciated rather than expensed. There is no input tax credit equivalent, so sales tax charged on a business purchase is normally deducted along with the item rather than recovered separately. Confirm the treatment for your own items with your preparer.

Keeping the receipt once you have it

Costco's two-year online window is shorter than the retention period either tax authority expects. The CRA generally wants six years of records, so there is a four-year stretch where the purchase is gone from your account and you are relying on paper, the membership counter, or nothing.

That gap is what scan-ai closes. Photograph the receipt once and the line items, the total and the tax are extracted and filed against a T2125 or Schedule C category, which is the per-line detail a mixed Costco basket needs. Most merchants are far less forgiving than Costco. The receipt lookup guides cover how far back each one goes.

Frequently asked questions

How far back can I get a Costco receipt? Two years online, shown in six-month windows in the In-Warehouse tab of your account. Beyond two years, visit the membership counter with photo ID, your membership number and the purchase date. In Canada there is a firm ceiling: Costco states it can only provide receipts for purchases made within the past 10 years.

Can I get a Costco receipt if I paid cash? Usually yes, which is unusual for a retailer. Costco requires a membership to check out, so the purchase is recorded against your membership number however you paid, and it appears in your account history like any card purchase. Allow up to 24 hours for a recent trip to show.

Will the CRA or IRS accept a Costco receipt I reprinted from my account? A reprint carries the same detail as the original slip: warehouse, date, items and tax charged. As a record it does the job. The weak point with Costco is not format, it is timing: the reprint stops being available after two years, well before the six-year retention period the CRA generally expects. The rules on digital receipts cover what makes an image adequate.

Is my Costco membership fee tax deductible? It is the kind of cost T2125 line 8760 is for, covering annual licences, dues to a trade or commercial association, and subscriptions. The CRA bars dues for clubs whose main purpose is dining, recreation or sporting activities, which a wholesale warehouse is not, but the deduction still depends on genuine business use. Ask your accountant how much qualifies.

Why is my gas or Food Court purchase missing from my receipt history? Some Costco categories never reach online purchase history: Instacart orders, gasoline bought before 30 September 2024, Food Court, Optical and Travel. For a copy of one of those, your local warehouse or Costco customer service is the only route, and the sooner you ask the better.
